The Future of Podcasting: Trends to Watch in the Coming Years
Podcast services to boost your brand!
In this piece we’re going to attempt to predict the future - Well, the future of the audio format at least! To truly understand the trajectory of spoken word content (& podcasts in particular), we must first examine how they've evolved to this point and at how (& why) we consume the content.
It really was not that long ago that the term "podcast" first came into being. Now, it's a household term, with audio content on everything from news and current affairs to niche hobbies and personal development. But podcasts are very far from being just a passing trend, for there is very strong evidence that firmly positions podcasts as a format of the future, and we for one, are very sure that audio content is here to stay!
Podcasting - The History
Podcasting emerged in the early 2000s, when MTV host Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer devised a way to automatically download internet radio broadcasts to Apple iPod devices. The term "podcast" itself derives from: ”iPod" and "broadcast." Initially, podcasts were seen as a fairly niche form of entertainment, mainly consumed by the tech savvy enthusiasts.
Fast forward to the mid 2010’s when the true-crime podcast ‘Serial’ emerged and ignited a passion for podcasts that the world had never seen to that point. With well-written stories which developed over many episodes, nearly everyone became aware of the power of podcasts.
Incredible Growth
The growth of podcasting has been truly staggering, as evidence; according to ‘Podcast Insights’ in 2021, there were over 2 million podcasts and more than 48 million episodes available to listeners! This figure represents a colossal increase from the few thousand podcasts available just one and a half decades earlier. Podcasting also boasts a broad and diverse listenership, a podcast listenership is not confined to specific age groups, cultural groups, or genders.
One reason why this growth has been sustainable is that Podcasts have evolved from being merely passion projects, to a legitimate form of revenue stream. Sponsorships, advertising, merchandise, and platforms such as Patreon, all offer viable means of financial sustainability for creators.
Looking to the Future of the Audio Format
When it comes to news and current affairs, podcasts offer immediacy that can’t be matched with traditional print-based media. Podcasts are ‘on-demand’, allowing listeners to consume content at their convenience. This accessibility is especially appealing to younger generations who have grown up in a digital age of instant information.
Podcasts also give a wide range of opinions, and as our societies seem more polarised than ever, the fact that you can find access to independent journalists, experts, and niche commentators who share your viewpoints is a very big attractor. Podcasts also give in-depth analysis and long-form storytelling that traditional news broadcasts often lack due to time and budgetary constraints.
To round up, podcasts have a unique ability to build and sustain communities around shared interests. They also create a sense of belonging and connection, allowing enthusiasts to explore their passions deeply. The fact that they can also generate revenue for content creators around the globe all but ensures that podcasts are well and truly here to stay!
